The one thing that I was very excited about doing with hubby was going to the farmer's market at Trout Lake. I personally love going to farmer's markets; I have fond memories of going to the one back home with my mom when I was younger. I just love being able to get truly fresh fruits and vegetables, completely unlike the stuff that one gets in the grocery stores. Way back in June, I picked up a postcard advertising the various markets in the area, and have since marked them in our calendar as reference for things to do if ever I want to go out for a walk with Miss Nugget. I've been going to the smaller markets during the week while hubby is at work (I previously went to the Yaletown market and I went to the Granville Island market the following week), but I really wanted to go to Trout Lake because it is the biggest of all the markets and I've never been to Trout Lake either.
When we arrived, it was already fully in swing and was swarming with people. With each stall that I visited, I found new treasures: beautiful heirloom tomatoes, freshly made pies, cookies and other baked goods, several varieties of potatoes (ended up getting four bags from there!), wonderfully sweet smelling strawberries, cherries, raspberries, plums, and peaches, fresh cheeses...such bounty! By the time we left, the storage at the bottom of Miss Nugget's stroller was absolutely full of all the food that we purchased.
So far, no disappointments with the food that we got. The raspberries and strawberries are already finished, and were perfectly sweet and juicy. I had a peach and a plum when we got back from the market; the peach was dripping with juice and the plum was easily the freshest tasting plum I've had in a long time. I'm planning on making a potato salad with the Russian blue and Yukon gold potatoes that we picked up later this week, and yesterday, we made a curry with some of the Bintje potatoes that we found. I'm also planning on making a cherry chocolate upside down cake with the cherries that we picked up. Hopefully we'll be making a few more visits to the market while it's still on! Enjoy the rest of the week and happy cooking all!
